1963 - Richard Petty scores his 23rd career win by winning the pole and leading all but two of the 35 laps on the road course at Bridgehampton, NY. Richard's victory was his first career road course win.
Fred Lorenzen qualified alongside Petty in his #28 Holman & Moody Ford. Also in the field was Lee Petty in a #41 Plymouth rather than his traditional #42. Lee was making only his fourth start since his near-fatal accident at Daytona in February 1961; however, Bridgehampton was his third start in 1963.
Lorenzen grabbed the lead from Richard at the start and led the first two laps. But Richard took it back from him on lap 3 and led the rest of the way.

Great post on #TheKingInNY. This is a great recap of the King's win at Bridgehampton-I'd heard about it but never saw lots of details. These are great. And Lee Petty raced in Maurice's 41? And that he raced at Islip? Excellent. I wonder what it was like for The King driving the haulers with Chief and Dale Inman through New York City to get out to Bridgehampton. I wonder if they stopped in NYC on their way. The sight of the King's Hauler on the Long Island Expressway? AWESOME.
ReplyDeleteThat's a '63 Plymouth Savoy, no? Is that the same car as '64? I have to rebuy "Cars Of The King." The first NASCAR video with Benny Parsons has Richard and Dale Inman talking about the '64 Plymouth-it's a great story.
