Nashville's track has had multiple surfaces and banking configurations over the decades. The current layout was built in the early 70s. In 1964, the track was configured such that the drivers could sling their cars through the corners - almost as if they were on a dirt track.

Petty Enterprises teammate Jim Paschal was originally scored as finishing 3rd behind David Pearson in Cotton Owens' #6 Dodge. The scoring results were updated; however, and he was credited with finishing second driving a #41 Petty Plymouth.

Petty's win was his second of the season at Nashville. He also began a win streak in the Nashville 400 that lasted four races from 1964 though 1967.
